Pashinyan says the army must maintain political neutrality

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan introduced the new head of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Artak Davtyan, and stressed that the army must maintain political neutrality.

“I must ask, we must agree that we must keep the principle of depoliticizing the armed forces and the principle of apoliticality sacred in the future. I do not need it, it is not necessary for a specific person or group – this is an important principle that is needed, first of all, by the armed forces”, – Pashinyan said.

Earlier it became known that Davtyan officially took over the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, despite the fact that the President of the Republic Armen Sarkissian did not sign the draft decree on Davtyan’s appointment to the post.

The internal political crisis in Armenia was aggravated after the representatives of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the republic demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. In response, the prime minister signed a decision on the dismissal of the head of the General Staff Onik Gasparyan.
