China says it has threatened the US to retaliate on Hong Kong at talks in Alaska

The ministry said Chinese representatives have also demanded that the White House lift all sanctions relating to Hong Kong

Chinese authorities during talks with a US delegation in Anchorage, Alaska, have threatened the US with tough measures in response to Washington’s pressure over the Hong Kong situation. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

“The Chinese side stressed that if the United States continues to resort to one-sided pressure measures, our country will definitely give a tough response”, –  the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

The ministry said Chinese representatives also demanded that the White House lift all sanctions relating to Hong Kong.

“The Chinese delegation insisted that the US adhere to international law and show respect for Beijing’s decision to streamline Hong Kong’s electoral system”, –  the document specified.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement released on Tuesday that the United States had compiled a list of 24 mainland Chinese and Hong Kong officials with whom foreign financial institutions would be prohibited from conducting significant transactions under threat of US sanctions. The US diplomat did not provide specific names of those on the list, but specified that it included, inter alia, 14 vice chairmen of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC, Parliament), Hong Kong police officers, representatives of the Chinese State Council Office of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs, as well as other agencies.
