Deputy U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Jeffrey de Laurentis said that the United States does not intend to recognize the results of the presidential elections in Syria if the vote is not held under UN supervision
This was reported by the Associated Press agency.
“It is clear that the Syrian regime will use the impending presidential election in May to unfairly claim Assad’s legitimacy,” Laurentis said.
In the autumn of 2020, the US and several of its Western allies accused the Syrian government of delaying the drafting of a new constitution in order to extend the time until this year’s presidential election and “avoid a UN-monitored vote”.
“We remain adamant that the only way forward is to advance a political process that meets the conditions set out in UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” Laurentis stressed.
UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which was adopted in December 2015, endorsed a roadmap for peace in Syria. It envisages the launch of a political process in Syria, which should begin with the establishment of a transitional government, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and culminate in general elections under UN supervision.
