A bill to strengthen security cooperation with Ukraine has been introduced in the US Senate, information has been published on the official website of the Senate
“The Security Partnership with Ukraine Act helps us rebuild our partnership by authorising multi-year assistance to help defend against Russian aggression, while encouraging progress on an unstable reform agenda. This legislation helps strengthen our strategic partnership and advances US national security interests”, – Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said of the bill.
The bill envisages up to 300m dollars a year for military assistance to Ukraine, including supplies of lethal weapons; up to 4m dollars a year for training of Ukrainian officers. Among other things, the document proposes speeding up the transfer of surplus defence items to Ukraine and calls for a strategy that would encourage US partners to do the same.
It also invites the US administration to appoint a special envoy for Ukraine to represent the U.S. in the Normandy Format peace talks and facilitate dialogue between the Black Sea communities.
The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the legislative initiative of a group of Democratic and Republican US senators to provide security and strategic support to Ukraine.
“Ukraine highly appreciates the initiative of a group of US senators representing both the Democratic and Republican parties to help our state in the sphere of security and strategic support. Perhaps providing additional funding for Ukraine’s defence sector will help improve military training, arming and logistics and accelerate the transition of the Ukrainian army to NATO standards”, – the OPG’s Telegram channel reported.
