Belgian MEP Philippe De Man (Identity and Democracy Group) raised the issue of the damage suffered by the EU countries due to the sanctions imposed by Brussels on Moscow. RT got acquainted with the deputy’s request sent to the Council of the European Union.
“Since 2014, the EU Council has imposed a number of restrictive measures and economic sanctions against Russia. The latter were recently extended until the end of 2021”, – De Man recalled.
He asked the council how they assess the scale of the damage suffered by Europe as a result of such decisions.
“Has the EU Council calculated the economic consequences of the adopted economic sanctions for the states of the European Union? What are the costs of these sanctions for the EU members?” – said the parliamentarian.
In 2014, a number of Western countries imposed sanctions against Russia in connection with the events in Ukraine. After that, Moscow was forced to retaliate. Since then, the parties have been consistently extending the terms of their mutual restrictions.
As Russian leader Vladimir Putin noted, by 2019, due to the imposed restrictions, Moscow lost about $ 50 billion, while the European Union lost $240 billion.
