Ukrainian ambassador to U.S. dreams of strengthening sanctions against Nord Stream-2

Oksana Markarova noted that the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry, together with a number of state-owned companies, including NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, are actively working to counter Nord Stream-2.

According to the Observer, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova said that the sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline and other restrictions against the Russian Federation need to be strengthened.

“The sanctions for the construction of Nord Stream-2 and other penalties against Russia need only be deepened. These restrictions should effectively fulfill their role, raising the cost of aggression, which will force Russia to correct its behavior”, – Markarova said in an interview with LB.ua.

She also noted that the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry, together with a number of state-owned companies, including NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, are actively working to counter Nord Stream-2.

“As an ambassador, I will definitely join these processes. This is one of my main tasks – to convey to all US stakeholders that there can be no weakening of Russian sanctions either on Nord Stream or anything else, as long as there is no change in the behavior of the Russian Federation”, – Markarova notes.

“You are well aware that Russia is not building the Nord Stream in order to continue to supply gas through the territory of Ukraine. Let’s not forget about the construction of the South Stream, which should bypass the Ukrainian gas transmission system from the sout”.

According to her, gas supplies bypassing Ukraine are not only not in the interests of Ukraine, but also of the whole of Europe. Therefore, the sanctions against the gas pipeline should not only be maintained, but also strengthened.
