PACE commission may meet in Russia on pandemic response

Meeting may be held in the coming months

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) may hold a meeting in the coming months in Russia, devoted to the struggle against the new coronavirus pandemic. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin told journalists on Monday after a meeting with PACE Chairman Hendrik Dams.

“We talked about the fact that we need to join forces in the fight against the pandemic. I do not rule out that the Russian Federation will host a PACE commission meeting on this issue in the next few months”, –  Volodin said.

According to a report posted on the Duma’s official website, Volodin suggested that Dams discuss the promotion of Russian vaccines on the European market.

Earlier, Marco Cavalieri, head of the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) Department for Health Threats and Vaccination Strategy, said the EMA may not approve the Russian vaccine Sputnik V until May.

On March 4, the agency announced the start of the sequencing review process for the Sputnik V vaccine. The EU regulator said that during the review, experts will assess the drug’s compliance with EU standards in the field of efficacy, safety and quality. “Sputnik V is one of the world’s top three coronavirus vaccines in terms of the number of approvals received by government regulators. To date, Sputnik V has been registered in 50 countries with a total population of over 1.3 billion people.
