EU unity is bursting at the seams: Pushkov commented on EU preparations to buy Sputnik V

Senator Alexei Pushkov, a Russian politician, believes that inaction by the European Commission in the crisis situation may result in the loss of control over the EU member states and the fall of the authority of the governing bodies of the European Union

Earlier it became known that the European Union intends to begin negotiations on the purchase of Russian vaccine against Sputnik V coronavirus in order to be able to implement an immunization program for the population. According to Reuters sources, requests from four countries are needed to start negotiations.

“The idle chatter of ‘Russian roulette’ has been discarded. AstraZeneca is in big question, Pfizer’s vaccine is in short supply, and the head of the European Commission is fending off accusations of vaccine shortages”, –  Pushkov wrote in his Telegram channel.

In his view, one of the main reasons for the EU’s high probability of purchasing Sputnik V was “the unity of the EU bursting at the seams.” Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia decided to buy the Russian vaccine without waiting for Brussels to approve it.

“In this crisis situation, inaction by the European Commission risks losing control over EU member states and moving towards autonomous action without regard to Brussels. This will inevitably lead to a decline in the authority and capacity of the EU governing bodies”, –  the parliamentarian said.
