US preparing new sanctions against Nord Stream 2

According to Politico, the US administration is caught “between a hammer and anvil”

Politico on Friday cited its sources as saying that US authorities are preparing additional unilateral sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

“We are always looking into pipeline-related activities that could be subject to sanctions. So if we see activity that meets that indicator, we are prepared to follow the law”, –  State Department spokesman Ned Price told Politico.

Under US law, the US administration is required to submit a report to Congress every 90 days identifying entities involved in pipeline construction that may be subject to sanctions. According to the newspaper’s sources, the process is currently underway and could be completed by May, when the government must submit the next report to lawmakers.

As the newspaper notes, the diplomatic situation regarding the construction of the pipeline remains sensitive. The Washington administration wants to thwart the project, but also wants to strengthen relations with Germany, which supports the pipeline.

“We are between a hammer and anvil”, –  said the newspaper’s interlocutor.
