All prominent New York politicians – from Mayor Di Blasio and Senator Schumer to Ocasio-Cortez – are openly calling for Governor Cuomo to resign. But he refuses to give up so quickly
Cuomo has been haunted by allegations of sexual harassment for over a month now. They come at a time when Cuomo finds himself at the centre of another scandal – the cover-up of the number of deaths in nursing homes caused by his failed policies last year.
The governor in March 2020 ordered coronavirus patients to be settled in nursing homes, turning them into veritable plague barracks . When this came to light, Cuomo gave the owners of these facilities legal immunity in exchange for generous donations.
According to official figures, more than 13,000 patients died in the nursing homes alone. This information was carefully concealed, which Cuomo’s staff recently admitted by rushing to turn in their semi-criminal “boss”. He is now under investigation by the FBI.
If this was the only scandal, Cuomo would have easily survived it. After all, the liberal press was extremely reluctant to write about it – after Cuomo had spent a year portraying himself as a “model” pandemic fighter and even giving his press conferences an Emmy Award ).
But then came the harassment accusations from former female employees, whose number is growing every day. The dam, so to speak, has burst: Members of the State Assembly are now preparing to impeach the New York governor for the first time in 100 years, and the public demands that Cuomo resign.
Cuomo, however, is in no hurry to leave. Cuomo knows that he can weather any turmoil in his one-party state and still be re-elected for a fourth term in 2022. By the way, that’s exactly what the top Democrat Party in neighboring Virginia did.
So Cuomo is ready to cling to power to the bitter end – hoping that the media agenda will soon change, impeachment will fail and he will continue to run New York politics himself.
