US may reconsider deadline for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan

Bob Menendez, chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that the deadline for the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan could be revised, since the Taliban (banned in Russia) do not fulfill their obligations under last year’s agreement.

“I am very concerned about the viability of the peace process in Afghanistan. If it is confirmed that the Taliban are not fulfilling their obligations, we will have to reconsider the deadline for the withdrawal of troops – May 1”, – said Menendez.

There are currently about 2,500 US soldiers in Afghanistan. In accordance with the US-Taliban agreement, which was signed in February last year, all US troops are to be withdrawn from the country by May 1.
