Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said at a press conference on Monday that the meeting between Pope Francis and Iraqi Shiite spiritual leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani shows the dialogue of religions and their rapprochement, TASS reported.
“The meeting with Iraq’s spiritual authority showed the dialogue between religions and their rapprochement,” he said, adding that “the Pope’s trip to Iraq was very important.”
He said that “thanks to the courage of the people, the wisdom of the authorities and the blood shed in the fight against extremism and foreign conspiracies, Iraq has now reached a level of security that makes such constructive visits possible.”
Francis was the first head of the Roman Catholic Church to visit Iraq. On March 6, he met with the Shiite spiritual leader in Iraq and held talks with him. The two sides discussed oppression and discrimination in today’s world and the importance of dialogue between religions to eliminate it.
