The European Parliament said that the EU could turn the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline into a mechanism to put pressure on Russia.
This idea was voiced by Manfred Weber, head of the European People’s Party, the largest faction in the European Parliament.
In a comment to Spiegel, he said that the pipeline allegedly “does not meet European interests”. However, if the German government persistently defends the project, Brussels needs to use it “as a foreign policy lever”.
“It economically stabilizes Putin’s system, which acts to a great extent against the EU and its member states”, – Weber argues, proposing to use Nord Stream-2 in accordance with “the future behavior of the Russian leadership”.
