Johann Zaathoff, the German government coordinator for inter-social cooperation with Russia, believes that it was irresponsible not to complete the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, RIA Novosti reports.
Zaathoff stressed that the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is 97% complete: about a hundred different private companies have taken part in its construction.
“Nord Stream-2 is important for the gas supply to Germany and the EU, it is important for the diversification of sources. The gas pipeline is also a kind of bridge connecting Germany and Russia, as well as the European Union with the Russian gas network. These connections need to be established and maintained, not destroyed. Even at the present time”, – he said.
Nord Stream-2 envisages the construction of two directions of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the shores of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The US actively opposes the construction of the pipeline, as it is promoting its liquefied natural gas to the EU.
