The initiative comes from Senators Todd Young and Tim Kane – Republican and Democratic representatives, respectively.
Senators have proposed repealing a decree, passed shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, allowing the US president to use military force without the consent of lawmakers.
The reason for the proposed changes was airstrikes on Syria, which the US military carried out on the orders of US President Joe Biden.
“The airstrikes show that the executive branch, regardless of the party, will continue to expand its military powers”, – the Senate said.
According to the authors of the project, the current laws allow the country to conduct “endless wars” in the Middle East for two decades.
