The US State Department has awarded former Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Ryaboshapka for fighting corruption, who was dismissed precisely because of his lack of results in the fight against corruption
According to a statement by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the international award is given to those who have “worked tirelessly, often in the face of adversity, to uphold transparency, fight corruption, and seek retribution in their own countries.” A total of 12 people received the award.
Ryaboshapka took over as prosecutor general in August 2019. In March 2020, the Verkhovna Rada gave him a vote of no confidence. The former prosecutor-general has been linked to the failure to sign suspicions against former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Also, the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) opened a criminal case against Ryaboshapka over declaring false information and receiving improper benefits through abuse of office.
