Biden’s promises of a “fair and humane” restructuring of migration policy have not yet been fulfilled – both Republicans and Democrats have recognized the onset of the migration crisis
After the failure of the anti-COVID program and an unsuccessful attempt to give the Americans the promised increase in the minimum wage, the migration crisis adds to the list of tasks that were beyond Joe Biden’s strength.
In just a month of his presidency, this democrat was able to demonstrate to voters his failure in three directions. So, Biden insisted on opening new vaccination centers throughout the country, but, as it turned out, the vaccines themselves are not enough for them in the United States. He also promised to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, but failed to push the initiative through the Senate.
Now Biden is forced to return to the methods of his predecessor in the migration policy, which he promised to make “fair and humane”. Unable to curb the flow of migrants, the new US president decided to resort to the quick expulsion of migrants bypassing the legal procedure and placing illegal minors in special detention centers.
So, on Monday, the Biden administration reopened the detention center in Carrizo Springs, Texas. Children who arrive in the United States unaccompanied by an adult are sent there. The facility, used for the same purpose by the Donald Trump administration, has sparked an outcry in the past among Democrats and human rights activists. Now a wave of criticism is catching up with Biden.
“It’s one thing to make promises. It’s another thing to execute on those promises”, – said Frank Sharry, executive director of the advocacy group America’s Voice.
He also pointed out that the Biden administration is not fully disclosing its plans. This leads to misunderstanding and hostility from people. However, a paradox arises here, according to the expert community. If the president fully discloses his migration policy, it could provoke unrest among migrants on the US-Mexican border. The authorities are not yet ready to deal with this.
At present, the administration uses the practice of past presidents, which is not entirely satisfactory for it, for example, placing unaccompanied minors in temporary detention centers.
The crisis that Biden faces today is fueled by the fact that there is simply no infrastructure to manage the arrival of migrants in an orderly manner. And in doing so, Biden decided to uphold Trump’s coronavirus emergency declaration, known as Title 42, which effectively closes the border from any migration in the name of a pandemic.
