German political scientist calls Ukraine’s mistake on Nord Stream-2

German political scientist Alexander Rahr, on the air of the Russia 1 TV channel, called Ukraine’s mistake over the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2.

“But I think that a country like Ukraine is making a huge mistake, it should be ashamed. Because the European Union is attracting Ukraine to its energy space. And Ukraine understands that Biden wants to come to an agreement with Europe – the Americans stop interfering directly, brazenly, as it was under Trump, in the energy security of Europe. Now Ukraine is trying to do it. Trying again to provoke some scandals, conflicts with Russia, in order to stop Nord Stream-2 in alliance with Poland at the last meters, when America no longer supports this situation, is just shortsighted”, – Rahr said.

The specialist noted that the European Union wants Ukraine to be a reliable intermediary in the transit of Russian gas to EU countries. At the same time, he stressed that Europe also wants Kiev to build constructive contacts with Moscow.

Rahr also expressed confidence that the Russian gas pipeline will be completed.

The Russian project Nord Stream-2 envisages the construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, Nord Stream-2 will pass through the territorial or exclusive economic zones of Finland, Sweden and Denmark.

The United States actively opposes the pipeline, promoting its liquefied natural gas to the European Union, as well as Ukraine and a number of Eastern European countries. Washington has repeatedly imposed sanctions to prevent the pipe from being laid, but construction continues.
