Pashinyan claims military coup attempt and fires head of General Staff

Earlier on Thursday, the leadership of the Armenian Armed Forces General Staff urged Pashinyan to resign

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has sacked the head of the General Staff, Onik Gasparyan, Sputnik Armenia reports. He announced this when he went live on Facebook immediately after a joint statement by high-ranking Armenian military officials demanding the dismissal of the Prime Minister. According to Pashinyan, the General Staff thus attempted to triple the coup d’etat.

“The situation is very complicated. You know I have decided to dismiss the Chief of General Staff and his First Deputy. I will announce the reason for these decisions in the square. Now the most important task is to preserve civil and people’s power”, –  he said.

Prime Minister Pashinyan then called on his supporters to gather in the Republic Square “to defend the revolution”, calling the military’s demand a “coup attempt”.
