CNN: Pentagon concerned about radicals’ desire to recruit into military ranks

According to the channel, in particular, the US Department of Defense proposed to introduce additional questions in the recruitment process in order to identify the propensity of recruits to extremist ideas

The US Department of Defence has released an internal report on the presence of racial supremacists in the ranks of the military. The CNN program says the document says the Defense Department is also discussing how to identify extreme right-wing devotees by their tattoos and insignia. The agency is particularly concerned about attempts by extremist groups to recruit the military.

The investigation in question was prompted by the January 6 riots on the grounds of the US Congress, when a crowd of supporters of 45th President Donald Trump tried to prevent the confirmation of the results of the head of state’s election. Among those detained for taking part in the illegal action were former and active military personnel.

The document makes recommendations on how the Pentagon can use intelligence assistance to screen recruits for links to extremists.

“Active and former military personnel are a prime target for such groups because they bring the combat and tactical experience necessary to carry out attacks”, –  the text reads.

While any involvement and support of radical currents is prohibited, there are no official rules and regulations prescribing the dismissal of offenders. The only exception is the Navy.

In this regard, the channel notes, the main aim of the report is how to help weed out extreme right-wing supporters before hiring. For instance, it proposes to introduce additional questions at recruitment to identify recruits’ propensity for extremist ideas.
