The European Union is considering imposing new sanctions against Belarus. This was stated by head of European diplomacy Josep Borrel on February 22
“The repression and intensified persecution of people and civil society by the authorities continues, we are considering further sanctions. We are ready to move forward on this issue. And we will do so”, – he said.
At the same time, Borrell stressed that the EU supports the Belarusian people and will punish those who deny them their fundamental political rights.
As a reminder, presidential elections were held in Belarus on 9 August. Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner. The opposition and Western countries considered the election results falsified and protests broke out in the country.
In response, the authorities launched a massive crackdown on their opponents. The European Union introduced three rounds of sanctions against Belarusian officials and companies.
