The so-called green zone of the Iraqi capital has come under fire
The Green or International Zone is the central area of Baghdad, enclosed by a perimeter fence. Government buildings as well as embassies of other countries are located here.
Xinhua news agency reported, citing sources in the Iraqi Interior Ministry, that the Green Zone was hit by a missile strike. Two missiles are now known to have struck. Although the exact location of the impact has not yet been ascertained, sirens sounded at the US embassy grounds during the bombardment.
It is worth noting that the US embassy has repeatedly been targeted by Iraqi militias and protesting Iraqi citizens.
