The United States will continue “decisive action” against the authorities in Myanmar, violently suppressing opponents of the military coup, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken proclaimed on Sunday after two protesters were killed in shooting last weekend.
For more than two weeks, the Myanmar security forces could not have managed to cease more than two weeks of daily protests and civil disobedience actions with the aim of putting an end of the February 1 coup and getting release of the detained elected leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
“The United States will continue to take strong action against those who commit violence against the people of Burma as they demand the re-establishment of their democratically elected government”, – Blinken said in a tweet.
“We support the people of Burma”, – he added.
His assurance came 10 days after the United States imposed sanctions on the acting president of Myanmar, also known as Burma, and several officers.
President Joe Biden has approved sanctions against those responsible for overthrowing the civilian government of that Southeast Asian country, including the defense minister and three companies in the jade and gem sector.
At the same time, in a statement on Sunday, the Myanmar Foreign Ministry reiterated the junta’s position that the seizure of power was constitutional, and that the statements of some embassies and foreign states “amount to gross interference in the internal affairs of Myanmar”.
