Italian ambassador killed in Congo

The Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo was killed in an attack north of the city of Goma.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 am local time [11:15 am Moscow time]. The attack targeted a United Nations convoy near the town of Kanyamahoro, north of Goma. The attack killed the Italian ambassador to the DRC, Luca Attanasio, and the military accompanying him.

“It is with deep regret that the Foreign Ministry confirms the death of the Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo Luca Attanasio and a Carabinieri policeman in Goma today”, – the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
