German Bundestag deputy Waldemar Gerdt criticized the “medieval methods of siege” used by Ukraine against the peninsula, and announced his intention to raise this issue in the German parliament, RIA Novosti reports.
“Stopping the supply of fresh water to the territory is some kind of medieval siege method. I will raise the issue in the Bundestag in order to consider at the Human Rights Commission whether international law is being infringed on, on the basis of which decisions are made to cut off water, especially by Ukraine, where Germany is investing millions of euros in the development of democratic processes. I will ask the government to assess the effectiveness of our investments in the development of a democratic society in the Ukrainian state”, – Gerdt said.
The German deputy stressed that there is absolutely no logic in the actions of the Kiev authorities: Ukraine calls Crimea “its own”, but evidently does not love the inhabitants of the peninsula as it blocks their drinking water. According to Gerdt, Kiev is taking an “anti-human approach”.
Until 2014, Ukraine provided up to 85% of the peninsula’s needs for fresh water, which went through the North Crimean Canal. After the reunification of Crimea with Russia, Kiev unilaterally stopped the supply of fresh water.
