State Department spokesman Ned Price reiterated that the US considers Nord Stream-2 a “bad deal” for Europe.
According to TASS, the head of the State Department’s press service, Ned Price, said on Friday during a regular briefing that the US authorities did not disclose the essence of their negotiations with the EU on the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project.
“I wouldn’t want to characterize private discussions”, – Price said.
At the same time, he reiterated that the United States considers Nord Stream-2 a “bad deal” for Europe.
“For some time, we made it clear that we consider Nord Stream-2 a bad deal and that companies risk being sanctioned if they participate in the project. But as we said, we are not announcing any potential sanctions in advance. We will continue to work with our allies and partners to ensure that Europe has a reliable and diversified energy supply that does not compromise our collective security. Our goal in all of this is to strengthen European energy security and protect against predatory behavior”, – said Price.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that Germany is working on a solution that should convince the administration of US President Joe Biden to abandon sanctions on the Nord Stream2 gas pipeline. According to the newspaper, German politicians are considering the possibility of applying a mechanism that would allow Germany to independently block Nord Stream 2 if Russia, for example, puts pressure on Ukraine and arbitrarily reduces supplies through its gas transportation system.
