Rally demanding Pashinyan’s resignation begins in Yerevan

A rally of many thousands demanding the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan started on Saturday at Freedom Square in Yerevan.

The rally was organized by the “Homeland Rescue Movement”, which unites about 20 political forces seeking the departure of the head of government. Opposition political and public figures, former deputies and ex-ministers, representatives of the Armenian Apostolic Church participate in the action.

Opposition rallies are regularly held in the country demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Pashinyan, which began after he signed a ceasefire agreement in Karabakh in November 2020. Opposition forces demanding his resignation have nominated the former head of the country’s government Vazgen Manukyan for the post of prime minister. At the end of December, Pashinyan invited political forces to consultations on holding early parliamentary elections in 2021. However, the authorities later declared that there was no public demand for the elections.
