Armenian opposition leader calls on supporters to be ready to take power

The leader of the united opposition of Armenia Vazgen Manukyan called on his supporters to be ready at any time to take power with “lightning speed”.

He stated this at a rally of many thousands demanding the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which takes place on Saturday at Freedom Square in Yerevan.

The rally was organized by the “Homeland Rescue Movement”, which unites about 20 political forces seeking the departure of the head of government. Opposition political and public figures, former deputies and ex-ministers, representatives of the Armenian Apostolic Church participate in the action.

Manukyan stated the need to deprive Pashinyan of three of his support pillars: the rest of the population, security officials, and pro-government deputies.

“Armenia must boil, mass actions must be continued, the city must be paralyzed. But there is also a plan B. At any time, you must be ready to take power with lightning speed”, – said Manukyan.

Opposition rallies are regularly held in the country demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Pashinyan, which began after he signed a ceasefire agreement in Karabakh in November 2020. Opposition forces demanding his resignation have nominated the former head of the country’s government Vazgen Manukyan for the post of prime minister. At the end of December, Pashinyan invited political forces to consultations on holding early parliamentary elections in 2021. However, the authorities later declared that there was no public demand for the elections.
