Elected politicians must live up to the trust – EU ambassador to Moldova

The head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Peter Mihalko, stated that the EU was concerned that the people involved in the fraud were involved in the decision-making process of forming the new government of Moldova

“It is worrying when people involved in bank fraud are involved in the negotiations or decision-making process on the formation of a government. It is important for Moldova to have a functioning government, a credible parliament. We prefer reliable partners as well”, –  the diplomat said on the Cotidianul LIVE show.

He stressed that the perpetrators of the bank fraud, which has seriously harmed Moldova, “should be punished and go to jail”.

In 2014, $1 billion disappeared from three Moldovan banks. The fraud was the result of all three banks transferring funds to front companies. The total losses amounted to about 12% of Moldova’s GDP.

In May last year, the republic’s general prosecutor, Alexandru Stoianoglo, claimed that fugitive oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc was the main beneficiary of the bank theft.
