Biden says human rights abuses will have consequences for China

The White House chief stressed that the US intends to continue standing up for human rights at the UN and other organisations “that have an impact on China’s behaviour”

US President Joe Biden said China should expect repercussions amid the situation of alleged human rights violations. The US leader made the relevant statement while addressing a public meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday evening.

The host asked the American leader if he had discussed the situation in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) during a telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Biden answered the question in the affirmative, but stressed that he did not plan to publicly condemn the situation in Hong Kong, XUAR and Taiwan.

“I plan to make it clear openly that we intend to continue to stand up for human rights at the UN and other organisations that have influence over their [China’s] behaviour”, –  Biden stressed. –  “There will be consequences for China, and [Xi Jinping] knows that”, –  the White House chief pointed out, responding to a related question from the host.

“China is trying hard to become a world leader. In order to earn that title, in order for them to be able to do that, they need to gain the confidence of other countries,” Biden continued. – As long as they engage in activities that violate basic human rights, it will be difficult for them to achieve this.

Last Wednesday, Biden, in his first telephone conversation as US president with Chinese President Xi Jinping, discussed combating the spread of a new coronavirus, climate change and preventing the spread of weapons around the world. In addition, Biden “expressed concern” about the situation in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Taiwan. The Chinese president, according to China Central Television, said the confrontation between the two countries was a disaster for them and for the world.
