Between 1972 and 2009, US military personnel committed 5,634 felonies, including 25 murders, 385 robberies, 25 arsons, 127 rapes, 306 assaults, and 2,827 thefts. Incidents like this continue to occur, prompting official protests from the Japanese side and street people from local residents.
As the Telegram channel National Course writes, there are 91 US facilities in Japan. They occupy 315 square kilometers, which is approximately 10.4% of the total area suitable for placement.
“The US forces and troops in Japan have about 47 thousand military personnel, about 52 thousand members of their families and 5,500 civil servants”, – the report says.
“The Japanese government pays for the maintenance of military facilities. The funds are mainly used to pay for utilities, as well as pay salaries to the maintenance personnel of the bases, consisting of Japanese citizens”.
This funding is not provided for in the bilateral agreement on the status of the US armed forces in Japan and is voluntary. For every American military, Tokyo spends 106 thousand dollars a year.
