Even the Biden administration is taking steps that are hard to see support for Ukraine.
As previously reported by News Front, one of the first decisions of the new US president in the international arena was the extension of the Treaty on the Reduction of Offensive Arms. The move pushed Joe Biden into dialogue with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Moreover, the Democrats decided to rethink the previous administration’s approach to Nord Stream-2. Donald Trump tried in vain to disrupt the construction of the gas pipeline. His successor decided to go the other way, along the way normalizing relations with Germany.
Such manipulations in the international arena do not bode well for Ukraine, Kiev diplomat Roman Bessmertny is sure. After the coup d’état, the oligarch Petro Poroshenko who came to power boasted that he had created some kind of anti-Russian coalition. Now it ceases to exist.
“Three events have taken place during these days”, – says Bessmertny.
“Firstly, Putin’s negotiations with the new US president. After about a week, they extend the START Treaty, and then, out of the blue, the construction of Nord Stream-2 is resumed. Such coincidences are not accidental”.
Of course, the West was assured that they would block Nord Stream-2 if gas transit through Ukraine was cut off, the expert recalled. Nevertheless, such statements sound more like a formality and a tribute to the previous position.
“I have always looked at real politics as the interests of individual countries, and in the current situation we have to act in our own way”, – the diplomat continued.
“Threats are growing, the community or a club of friends against Putin is already reeling, as if on thin legs. This does not make it easier for Ukraine, because we are in the first trench”.
