German MEP Dietmar Kester said that the closure of TV channels in Ukraine is contrary to European practice and is a violation of the fundamental principles of democracy.
“Freedom of expression, independent journalism and due process of law in relation to these rights are fundamental democratic and European values. A free press, freedom of expression and freedom of speech are essential for the functioning of civil society and democracy”, – said Kester.
The MEP stressed the unacceptability of the media ban, which threatens the work of journalists and restricts access to the media. According to Kester, Zelensky’s decision to ban television channels out of court is a violation of “procedural rules and freedom of speech”.
Recall that on February 2, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky by his decree banned the broadcasting of three opposition TV channels “112 Ukraine”, “NewsOne” and “ZIK”.
“Zelenskiy dreams of cleaning up the information field, as his entourage advises him, so that the informational communication between the president and the Ukrainian people takes place at the intellectual level of a kindergarten, under the Christmas tree, when the president is broadcasting and a grateful audience listens to him? Would you like to reduce communication to “cool vidoes”? This will not happen! It won’t work like that!” – said Viktor Medvedchuk, chairman of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party.
