US lawmakers intend to find out why the country’s security forces allowed the situation to spiral out of control.
Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress have called for the creation of a bipartisan commission similar to the one created after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack.
“We need to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again, and I want to make sure the Capitol is better defended next time”, – said Republican Senator Lindsay Graham of South Carolina.
Democrat Chris Koons of Delaware supported the initiative. According to him, a special bipartisan commission “will make sure that in the future we ensure the security of the Capitol”.
As News Front previously reported, the new year in the United States began with massive protests in Washington. Conservative Americans opposed the recognition of the results of the presidential elections, during which cases of vote-rigging were recorded. The action turned into an assault on the building of the US Congress. The protest was suppressed, after which repression began against supporters of Donald Trump.
But the rally was organized publicly, so questions arise to the security forces. Law enforcement agencies and even special services did not prepare properly. As a result, on the day of the assault, the building of the US Congress was guarded by a minimum number of officers who were not even instructed in responding to the actions of the protesters. The Capitol Police Chief generally escaped and hid in a safe place with then-Vice President Mike Pence.
It is worth noting here that the Capitol Police has over 2.3 thousand employees, and the budget has reached $ 500 million. For comparison, the Minneapolis Police Department, home to 425,000 people, has only 840 officers, and the budget is $ 176 million.
