Germany needs to extend its mandate for the NATO mission in Afghanistan so as not to jeopardise the negotiation process between the Afghan authorities and the radical Taliban, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told the Funke editorial team.
“Thanks to the new mandate from the Bundestag, we will be prepared for different scenarios”, – he said.
The current mandate entails the participation of up to 1,300 FRG troops in the mission. It expires on 31 March. It is up to parliament to extend it.
