Media: Police fire to disperse protesters in Myanmar

According to The Irrawaddy, 14 people have been detained

Law enforcement authorities in Myanmar have dispersed a protest against a military takeover outside Molamyain University. Fourteen people have been detained, The Irrawaddy website reported on Friday.

Police opened fire to disperse the protesters in the town of Molamyain, it said. About six shots were fired, according to Frontier Myanmar.

The previous day, police searched the campus of Molamyain University, where the protest was taking place. It is noted that the participants in the nationwide strike are students and teachers of the institution who have joined the Myanmar Civil Disobedience Movement.

On 1 February, the Myanmar military declared a one-year state of emergency and ousted the country’s leadership, attributing it to widespread fraud in the November 2020 elections. High-ranking officials have been detained, including President Win Myin and state councillor, foreign minister and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party won the election and was to start forming a government. Protests are taking place in many cities in the republic for the seventh consecutive day.
