Xi Jinping calls China-US confrontation a disaster for the world

Chinese president said the countries should restore dialogue mechanisms to clearly understand each other’s intentions

The confrontation between China and the United States is a disaster for both countries and for the world. Chinese President Xi Jinping said this on Thursday during a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden.

“China-US cooperation can lead to many important developments that will benefit both the two countries and the world”, –  he was quoted as saying by China Central Television. –  “The confrontation between the PRC and the US is undoubtedly a disaster for the two countries as well as for the world”, –  Xi Jinping stressed.

He said cooperation between the PRC and the US would benefit the two sides, while a fight would hurt both. Xi Jinping noted that China-US relations are currently at an important stage. As he pointed out, promoting a healthy and stable development of Sino-US relations is a shared expectation of both the people of the two countries and the entire international community.

“Both sides should make efforts and move towards each other, adhere to [the position of] non-confrontation and non-conflict, mutual respect and mutually beneficial cooperation, focus on cooperation, control differences, promote healthy, sustainable and stable development of Sino-US relations, ensure benefits for the peoples of the two countries”, –  the Chinese president said.

He also pointed out that China and the US should contribute to the global fight against the pandemic, restore the global economy, and maintain regional peace and stability. “In the current situation of total uncertainty, China and the US, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, have a special international responsibility and commitment. The parties must follow the trends of the times, ensure peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region together, and make historic contributions to promoting peace and stability in the world,” he summarised.
