Rouhani said he had not yet noticed any goodwill gestures from Biden

According to the Iranian president, “no one doubted that maximum pressure on the Iranian nation would fail”

Tehran has yet to see any goodwill gestures from US President Joe Biden on returning to the nuclear deal. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said this on Thursday.

“We have yet to see any gestures of goodwill from the new US government. Their rhetoric has changed, but we have to see in practice how they want to compensate for this crime (referring to Washington’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal under previous President Donald Trump)”, –  ISNA quoted him as saying.

According to the president, “no one doubted that maximum pressure on the Iranian nation would fail.”

“In this regard, if the new government is telling the truth, it should immediately change its course and correct the mistakes of the past”, –  he added.

The statement came amid information about a possible return of the US to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after the start of Biden’s presidential term. Meanwhile, the Iranian side insists that Washington will return to the agreement in full without preconditions. However, the US side insists that the US will not take steps first. In addition, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has proposed expanding the JCPOA to include regional policy and Iran’s missile programme.

The future of the JCPOA regarding Iran’s nuclear programme came into question following Trump’s decision to unilaterally withdraw from it by the US on 8 May 2018 and Washington’s imposition of oil export sanctions against Tehran. According to the Islamic Republic’s version, the other parties, especially the Europeans, have not fully adhered to their obligations in the economic part of the agreement, so the nuclear deal in its current form does not make sense. Consequently, Iran has begun to phase out its obligations under the agreement regarding uranium enrichment and research activities, and in early January 2020 announced the end of the process.
