The recognition by the US Senate of the impeachment process of former President Donald Trump as constitutional was a predictable decision, but they will not have enough votes to impeach, the director of the US Research Fund named after A. Franklin Roosevelt at Moscow State University Yuri Rogulev.
Earlier Tuesday, the US Senate called Trump’s impeachment process constitutional. 56 Senators, including six Republicans, voted for the constitutionality of the impeachment of the former president. However, 44 Republican senators, having voted against, made it clear that they intend to secure Trump’s acquittal. It takes 67 votes in the Senate to impeach the former president. Trump is on trial on charges of instigating a mob riot that trampled the US Capitol on January 6 following Trump’s rally calling for an obstruction of the election results.
The mood among the senators was clear from the very beginning, and many in the United States predicted that this is how the first day of the process would end, the expert noted.
“It was a predictable decision. It is indicative that the chairman of the Supreme Court should have chaired the session. He refused to do so and had to nominate the chairman from their ranks. Naturally, it was a Democratic senator who had already voted for impeachment. this is not supported, because the constitution does not say anything about removing from office a person who no longer holds this position. We are talking about the incumbent president and it is clearly said there. Therefore, the question of constitutionality is very acute and uncertain”, – he said in an interview with the agency.
Speaking about the duration of the process, Rogulev noted that there is no need to discuss the topic for a long time, everyone understands that this is pure politics.
“It is clear that they will see this to the end. But it is also clear that they will not have a majority. The first vote showed that the Republicans have decided to support Trump at the moment. They are simply using it as a political act, you have to say “B”. They said this “A” before Trump took the presidency. Here they have been blowing this tune for four years. Now to give up this position is to harm themselves. This is a purely political process, no right does not play a role and still they will not gain the majority”, – he stressed.
