US intends to return to UN Human Rights Council

According to the AR, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will announce within 24 hours that the country will return to this structure as an observer, “intending to seek election as a full-fledged member” of the HRC.

As reported by TASS, on Sunday the Associated Press (AP) agency disseminated information that the administration of the new US President Joe Biden is preparing to resume interaction with the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will announce within 24 hours that the country “will return to this Geneva-based structure as an observer, intending to seek election as a full member” of the HRC, according to his sources from among officials. The agency states that “this decision is likely to generate criticism from conservative lawmakers” in the United States, as well as from forces supporting Israel.

As noted in the material, the Biden administration believes that the HRC “must be reformed”, and the most effective way to achieve this is to “interact with it, guided by principles”. According to one source, the HRC is “an important forum for those fighting against tyranny and injustice around the world”. The US administration intends to participate in the HRC to “ensure its full potential is realized”.
