11,891 illegal immigrants have been rescued and returned to Libya in 2020
The people were picked up by two Libyan coastguard vessels and taken to the capital, Tripoli.
More than 400 illegal immigrants have been rescued off the Libyan coast. It was reported by Xinhua, citing the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on Friday, February 5.
“The UN and the International Rescue Committee provided them with vital assistance”, – it said.
According to the International Organisation for Migration, 323 migrants died and 417 went missing along the Central Mediterranean route in 2020, while 11,891 illegal immigrants were rescued and returned to Libya.
Recall that the number of migrants in the world has risen by nearly 110 million to 281mn in 20 years. The top five countries with the highest number of migrants are the US, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Russia and the UK.
