Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stressed that the channel had always complied with British law and covered events objectively, helping to promote dialogue between the two countries
The Chinese authorities strongly protest to the UK in connection with the withdrawal of the license from the British office of the Chinese TV channel CGTN and oppose London’s double standards. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Friday.
“The British regulator has put pressure on CGTN based on prejudice and political considerations, – ” he told a regular briefing. – “We strongly protest about this. <…> The British side openly maintains a double standard.”
The diplomat stated that London’s actions seriously harm cultural and humanitarian cooperation between the PRC and the UK. Wang Wenbin stressed that CGTN TV “has always complied with British law and covered events objectively, promoting dialogue between the two countries”.
“China insists that the UK should immediately stop its political machinations and correct its mistakes. Otherwise, we can take necessary countermeasures”, – he concluded.
On Thursday, the UK media regulator Ofcom revoked the licence of CGTN, a Chinese TV channel broadcasting in English. According to a statement issued, the license holder, Star China Media Limited, had allegedly failed to control the editorial policy of the broadcaster and was thus in breach of UK law.
