Minsk stressed that the extension of the START Treaty “meets the interests of the whole world community”
Minsk welcomed the entry into force of the agreement between Russia and the United States on the extension of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START III), considering it a major contribution to strengthening international security. This is what the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
“The Belarusian side welcomes the entry into force on February 3 of the agreement between the Russian Federation and the United States of America on the 5-year extension of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms dated April 8, 2010”, – the statement reads. – “We consider it a significant contribution to strengthening the existing architecture of international security and strategic stability. Minsk stressed that the extension of the START Treaty “is in the interest of the entire international community.”
“We believe that this agreement will create a solid foundation for further concrete steps in the field of nuclear disarmament and make this process irreversible and multilateral”, – noted the Foreign Ministry of Belarus. In this regard, the agency expressed hope that the decision of Moscow and Washington to maintain the START, which is one of the cornerstones of the global system of strategic stability, security and disarmament, “will contribute to creating favorable conditions for strengthening and restoration of the viability of multilateral arms control mechanisms in the Euro-Atlantic space.”
