Reuters: IMF sends $350m to Myanmar in days before coup

Reuters reports that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) sent $350 million in emergency aid to the government of Myanmar last week in connection with the coronavirus pandemic

The money arrived in the country just days before the coup d’état.

A Reuters source at the IMF said that unlike other IMF financial assistance programmes, funds that were provided under the emergency assistance programme could not be returned.

“We are closely following the unfolding events. We are very concerned about the impact of what has happened on the country’s economy and the people of Myanmar”, –  the IMF stressed.

On Monday, February 1, Myanmar’s military declared the overthrow of the country’s leadership and imposed a one-year state of emergency. They attributed their actions to the numerous fraudulent elections held last November.
