German regulator confirms contacts with Russia on Sputnik V”

The German Paul Ehrlich Institute, which is responsible for controlling the circulation of medicines in Germany, confirmed that it is in contact with the Russian side on the possible registration and further production of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in the EU, said the head of the institute, Klaus Zichutek.

Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the institute could provide such consulting assistance.

“I won’t call it joint work, because we have other tasks than the developers, but yes, there have already been requests, there have been contacts on this issue. The Paul Ehrlich Institute provides international support. This means that we have consulted our Russian colleagues in the format of a video conference on the regulation (of the turnover of medicines in the EU) in relation to two aspects”, – Tsichutek said at a press conference on Friday.

According to him, the first aspect of such consultations concerned the existing EU requirements for registration. The second aspect was the issue of further consultations in the EU regarding registration with the European Medicines Agency, including with colleagues from other countries of the union.

“This means that such contacts continue. We work with given the fact that the production will be possible also in Europe, to production, if it will meet our requirements (quality), data (the vaccine) should be such that when the question arises about a vaccine, it was allowed”, – added Cichutek.
