Stoltenberg urges NATO countries to increase defence spending

The organisation’s secretary-general noted the need to increase the readiness of the armed forces to fight global threats such as Russia’s aggressive behaviour, terrorism and the rise of China

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday at a meeting of the Military Committee at the defense chiefs’ session called on the alliance member states to continue to increase defense spending, invest in modern capabilities and improve the readiness of the armed forces to fight global threats such as Russia’s aggressive behavior, terrorism and the rise of China. A statement to this effect was published on the organisation’s website.

Stoltenberg stressed that the alliance must be prepared to deal with any threat arising in a more unpredictable and competitive world. “Our democracy, our values and the rules-based world order are being challenged. We must therefore be prepared to face any threat that the future may bring,” he said.
