The leadership of the US Republican Party will not appeal to former President Donald Trump to run for president in 2024. Ronna McDaniel, chairman of the party’s National Committee, made this statement in an interview with the Associated Press on Wednesday.
“The party should remain neutral,” she stressed in response to a question about whether the party leadership would appeal to Trump to run for president in the next presidential election. – I will not be urging anyone to run or not to run in the 2024 election.” According to Politico, Trump has previously told people in his entourage of his intention to run for US president in the next presidential election.
“The decision to run is left to the candidates,” McDaniel noted. She admitted, however, that the party leadership would welcome Trump’s efforts to return the Republican majority in the US House and Senate. “What I would really like from him is for him to help us regain the majority [in the midterm elections] in 2022,” the party chairwoman stressed.
On 24 January, Jason Miller, an adviser to the former president’s campaign staff, told CNN that Trump had abandoned plans to form a new political party. According to him, the former US leader is pursuing the goal of “taking back the Senate and the House of Representatives [of the US Congress] for Republicans in 2022”. The US Democratic Party won a majority in both houses of Congress in the November 2020 general election.
The Wall Street Journal and several other media outlets had previously reported that Trump had allegedly discussed the possibility of creating a new political party with his associates in recent days. Supposedly, he wanted to call it the Patriot Party. At the same time, CNN stresses that Trump’s advisers had not seriously considered his plans to create a third political force.
