Guterres says UNSC summit can help mend relations between countries

It will benefit everyone, says UN secretary-general

A summit of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, the United States, France, Britain and China) could help mend relations between the leading powers, which have been dysfunctional lately. United Nations (UN) Secretary General António Guterres told TASS in an exclusive interview.

“I think the relations between the major world powers have been dysfunctional. It is very important that this relationship functions better, everyone will benefit from that”, –  he said. – “That is why we are looking at the initiative of the summit of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council with the most positive expectations”.

At the same time, the secretary-general stressed that “the split between the superpowers spins the centrifugal forces that lead to the undermining of peace in various regions”.

Earlier, in an interview with TASS, Russian permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia said that Moscow confirmed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to hold a meeting of the leaders of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and expected the reaction of the new US administration to this proposal.
