The new US President Joe Biden intends to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START, START III) for five years, reports The Washington Post, quoting two unnamed senior US officials
“According to two senior US officials, President Biden is seeking a five-year extension of the last existing agreement limiting the arsenals of the two major nuclear powers”, – the report says.
The paper recalls that it expires in a few days.
The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START III) between the US and Russia entered into force in February 2011. It is valid for a ten-year period, until February 2021. After that, the two sides will have to reach an agreement: either to extend the existing agreements or to conclude new ones.
