Austria ready to mediate renewal of START Treaty

Vienna is ready to serve as a venue for US-Russia talks after Joe Biden agreed to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty

The Donald Trump administration is known to have ignored Russian calls for an extension of the START Treaty, which expires in early February. Biden, for his part, is ready to extend the agreement for five years at once.

“I see Washington’s statement as a positive signal. We, as a negotiating platform, are of course at disposal. There have been strategic talks between Russia and the US here in Vienna. If such negotiations are necessary, if it is a five-year extension, it goes without saying that we are available”, – said Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg.
